Poppy Honey’s story

18 years ago, the Anderson family were asked by social welfare to care for an abandoned premature newborn baby girl with brain damage, for a week. She had no name. The Anderson family gave her the name Poppy-Honey. And so the journey began from a few days of care and love to stabilise this precious severely disabled child, created in God’s image, to a lifelong commitment of love and nurture. Her disabilities include epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and autism.

After a week had turned into a month, and months into a year, it was clear and apparent that there was no loving home for Poppy-Honey, as social welfare could not find anyone to care for this severely disabled child who would “never walk or talk.”

After much prayer and discussion, the Anderson family made the decision to care for Poppy for life, and so began a lifetime of restorative, sacrificial love and care. Poppy-Honey has blossomed! She now walks, talks, swims and has the most beautiful laugh!

As the years go by, Lindy and Ross (both past retirement age) have felt the need for external support for Poppy to get the care and love she needs. However, because Poppy is no longer a child, it has been difficult to find an adult care home for Poppy that is both affordable, and that caters for her age and her specific combination of health and physical challenges. On the 7th of January 2025 Ross and Lindy received a call from Trevelyn Lodge, a home for adults with intellectual disabilities (www.trevelynlodge.co.za). For the first time in four years, they had a vacancy. Over the next few weeks Poppy-Honey was slowly introduced to Trevelyn Lodge under the loving supervision of Ross and Lindy. Read more…
